Atmark Techno develops a tiny ARM11 CPU module with support for multiple operating systems

08/17/2007 - 08:58

Atmark Techno, Inc. (Head Office: Sapporo Japan, President: Tomohiro Saneyoshi) has developed Armadillo-500, a tiny CPU module which utilizes a high performance ARM11 processor and supports multiple embedded operating systems, including WindowsCE, Linux and uITRON.

Armadillo-500 will take its place as the high end model in Atmark Techno's Armadillo series of small form-factor board computers. By employing Freescale Semiconductor's latest i.MX31 processor, Armadillo-500 will provide more than a three-fold increase in performance over existing products. The i.MX31 is based on an ARM11 CPU core, and operates with an impressive clock speed of 400MHz or more while maintaining low power consumption. It also includes a number of features which support use in various multimedia applications, such as a vector floating point coprocessor, a 128KB level two cache, a MPEG4 encoder, video output and an audio interface.

With the i.MX31 at its center, the Armadillo-500 CPU module implements the core functionality required in any embedded device on a board with dimensions of 34mm x 54mm, making it less than half the size of a business card. With the core functionality provided on a tiny form-factor board, device designers will be able to focus solely on the design of just the required peripherals. Being able to just connect an expansion board which is relatively simple and inexpensive to develop makes Armadillo-500 a highly suitable platform for projects with high-mix low-volume production runs.

Giving access to rich open source software resources, Linux will be provided as the default operating system. Other embedded operating systems, such as Windows Embedded CE 6.0 with its outstanding GUI and development environment, and uITRON with its real-time control functionality, will also be supported. This will provide the flexibility to meet the increasingly varied needs of embedded systems development. A development base board which can be used with Armadillo-500 will also be available for developers. The base board features various interfaces, including USB2.0 (480Mbps), Ethernet, CompactFlash, SD/MMC, audio, and VGA output. It will be sold as part of the Armadillo-500 Development Kit, which will also include base board schematics and design instructions, Linux source code and a software development environment.

Armadillo-500 will begin shipping in July, 2007, with pricing of approximately JPY20,000 for the CPU module in 100 unit lots, and JPY99,750 for the development kit.
