Atmark Techno develops network ready high-speed JTAG downloader

01/02/2005 - 09:45

Atmark Techno, Inc (Head Office: Sapporo Japan, President: Tomohiro Saneyoshi) has developed a new version of its JTAG-Blazer. The network ready high-speed FPGA/CPLD JTAG downloader can now be used with both Xilinx and Altera FPGA/CPLD solutions.

While the previous model was compatible with only Xilinx FPGA/CPLD, the new product is now also compatible with the highly requested Altera FPGA/CPLD.

FPGA and CPLD are programmable LSI and require the downloading of configuration data in order to operate. Until now, this downloading has been performed using parallel or USB cables directly from a computer. This method however has various problems, including the need to use separate cables for Xilinx and Altera devices, not being able to place the device freely due to fixed cable length, slow transfer speed, and dealing with notebook computers which do not have parallel ports.

The JTAG-Blazer is a JTAG downloader that can connect to a network (10BASE-T / 100BASE-TX) and download FPGA/CPLD configuration data at high speed (12.9Mbps MAX). As opposed to parallel and USB cables, there are no limitations to what cable length is used. Using the JTAG-Blazer, it is possible to make downloads from a remotely connected computer.

It is also possible to save the configuration data within the JTAG-Blazer. Saved configuration data can be downloaded to a device without using a computer by simply pressing the operating buttons on the JTAG-Blazer. This makes it possible to move freely to wherever the devices are placed and update the FPGA/CPLD configuration data on the devices with a few pushes of a button.

Being compatible with a wide JTAG signal voltage (1.8V to 5V), it can be used with various devices. Notes: FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) CPLD (Complex Programmable Logic Device)
