Linux and FPGA combined to create next generation embedded device solution

Atmark Techno, Inc (Head Office: Sapporo Japan, President: Tomohiro Saneyoshi) has developed SUZAKU-V, a higher performance version of the Linux compatible small form SUZAKU-S FPGA board.

As the penetration of network capable home and industrial devices deepens, the diversification of products is also greatly increasing. The SUZAKU-S has promptly answered the development needs for these kinds of devices. In the marketplace, network distribution of audio and video is becoming more common and there is an increasing need for higher need for higher performance network devices. The solution developed to respond to these new needs is the SUZAKU-V.

To enable high speed processing, the FPGA employed by the SUZAKU-V has been changed from the previously used Xilinx Spartan-3 to the more powerful Virtex-II Pro series. The Virtex-II Pro employs a PowerPC, a processor having a proven high performance record. Thanks to this, the SUZAKU-V enjoys more than a five-fold increase in performance over previous products. Together with the increase in processing power, memory capacity has also been increased to accommodate large data handling.

The SUZAKU series is a line of FPGA based board computers. The FPGA contains the processor on which Linux is run as the OS. As a FPGA based platform, internal logic can be flexibly extend, meeting the development requirements for various applications. Also, even more efficient development can be achieved by utilizing IP cores supplied by Xilinx and various other third parties.

As Linux is being employed as the standard OS, it is possible to make use of its powerful networking functionality and wealth of proven software resources. By doing so, networking device software can be developed both easily and rapidly. The SUZAKU boards are perfectly suited as long-life, small form, low cost board computers used in short time-to-market and flexible production process applications.

Pricing and Availability

By offering the newly developed SUZAKU-V together with the original SUZAKU-S, it will now be possible to choose the model best suited to cost and processing capability requirements. The SUZAKU-V is expected to be available from January 2005 at a price of 42,000JPY (excluding tax). Sales are expected to be at 5000 units per annum.
